I don’t know where the proponents of longer-heavier trucks get
their environmental statistics from, but perhaps the greater mystery is why
some agencies and lawmakers take the bait.



Large carriers and a certain prevue of lawmakers and
agencies continue to say that putting longer, heavier trucks on the highways
will conserve fuel and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The Medical Review Board is a tricky group to follow.



The MRB, a panel of appointees that make medical recommendations
to FMCSA, didn’t meet for most of 2010.

Years ago, I worked the city council
beat for a local newspaper. Some of those nights can be pretty boring. There
are the reporters lounging around on the back row, pencils poised for a worthy
development or sparkling quote.



Having been there, I always appreciate

Two, four and nine. Those are the ages of three kids in one
of the trucking families who would have had little under the tree if not for a
surprise gift of $700. The cash came from an unlikely benefactor.



Calling themselves the “Christmas group,” a small troop of volunteer
truckers raise money for other truckers in need. The effort has now has grown

you think the National Traffic Safety Board is going too far in recommending a
ban on hand-held phones and texting in all vehicles, you better hope they don’t
see research that indicates the, um, hydraulic pressure that builds up after
drinking coffee or soda and being in the cab for several hours is as
distracting as being drunk or sleep-deprived.

Methods used by candidates to reach voters are always

Wreaths Across America is fast becoming one of trucking’s
favorite holiday projects and it’s one that a number of trucking companies and
drivers donate their time to.



The project
told Land Line on Friday that they
currently have more than 30 trucking companies signed on to help with the

Illinois lawmakers have voted to override the veto of Gov.
Pat Quinn to enact legislation that is intended to prevent waste of animal

I wouldn’t go back to high school on a bet. I have a lot of
friends I keep in touch with and I have my fond memories. But there is no way I

The decision may have flown under the trucking radar, but a
recent White House move may have delayed hundreds of local emissions rules and
ordinances due to our economic downturn.



An ozone standard of 75 parts per billion, announced by the
Bush administration in 2008, would not be sought by the EPA, President Obama
announced in early September.

I saw a bumper sticker on an 18-wheeler: “THIS ISN’T AN RV.”
Well, that could be right I suppose, but on the other hand – if you have the
mind-set for it and can line up your ducks just right, a big truck can serve as

I’m one of those guys who picks up most of the free pubs in
the truck stops, and at home I enjoy an assortment of trucking magazines. I
have some advice for the people that write some of the articles, from the
trucker point of view.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg is getting ready for his
close-up and wants motorists to do the same. Bloomberg recently told the media
at a press conference that the city should install enforcement cameras at every
intersection.



Red-light cameras have been used in New York since 2007. The

In a not-so-distant past, our energy was cheap, fuel and
leisure were somewhat affordable for the working family, prices of everyday

The debate continues on hours of service, a rule that is back
on the table again. Imagine that. They keep tweaking and tweaking, for what?
They aren’t going to make everybody happy and make compliance rules to fit

Who me? Hardly. But I did try to
start a rumor once that I was T.A. “Al” Peterman’s grandson. Peterman was a
successful logger who bought out Fageol Trucks in 1938 and founded Peterbilt
Motors in 1939. 






 I often feel like Peterbilt
“royalty.” That’s probably because of the various honors and the recognition
awarded to my truck and us by Peterbilt.

The Indy 500 is far and away my favorite diversion from the
road. Actually it’s not something I took advantage of during downtime on the
road. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is in my back yard, 50 miles away. For
many years I made it a point to be here for race week.

question on a lot of people’s minds is “how the heck are we going to pay for
the next surface transportation bill?”



Is the nation headed for a tax based on vehicle miles
traveled, or VMT? We’ve seen headlines recently saying “Forget the fuel tax”
and “Mileage tax could replace gas tax.”

Let me see if I’m understanding this right. The U.S. and
Mexico are working toward fully opening the border for both U.S. and Mexican

TomTom, which makes GPS devices for motorists, recently confirmed that it has sold user data to police.

The data, in turn, was used by Dutch police to drum up new speed trap locations.

A couple of years ago New Jersey lawmakers essentially said
“the heck with truckers” when they approved a mandate for snow and ice to be
removed from vehicles. The decision was made despite an outpouring of contempt

Mexico’s situation is spiraling out of control with
violence. Our own government will not even send inspectors to work in Mexico
anymore. It’s too dangerous. The Department of Homeland Security issued an
alert warning truckers to stay out of Mexico.



Yet, here we are holding hands and singing “kumbaya” and
going to open our already weak border to trucks from Mexico.
